1952 Jowett Jupiter

Historics’ team has set the bar high ahead of its summer sale on August 31st, with a 1952 Jowett Jupiter owned and cherished for 13 years by Colchester United’s all-time record goal-scorer, Martyn King, looking to net the Brooklands-based auctioneer a winning result.

King chalked up 131 league goals for the club between 1959 and 1965, including a record six hat-tricks and, widely recognised as being good through the air and nimble on the ground, found familiarity in Jowett Cars Jupiter model.

Launched at the London Motor Show in October 1949, the Jupiter gained instant sporting success with a record-breaking class win at the 1950 Le Mans 24 Hour race, followed up with further victories at Le Sarthe and rallies across Europe throughout the early 1950’s.

The two seat drophead coupĂ©’s competition history belied the fact that it was a well-appointed tourer first and foremost however, and by the time production came to a close in 1954, some 900 cars had found a discerning new owner.

The car belonging to King until 2010 is the epitome of the marque, equally ready for rallying in and around Europe as well as open top touring, and under King’s ownership and that of the current vendor, has undergone a pain-staking body-off restoration in recent years.

With a number of sympathetic upgrades also commissioned, Historics’ forthcoming auction represents a rare opportunity to purchase such a well prepared example.

Finished in primrose yellow with biscuit leather seats, the 1952 Jowett Jupiter is expected to fetch offers in the region of £21,000 to £26,000 at auction on August 31st.

Viewing of all 130 consigned cars, and automobilia, is at Historics at Brooklands, near Weybridge, Surrey on Friday 30th August, from 10.00am, with the auction on the following day, Saturday 31st August.
