1976 Porsche 934 RSR Turbo - Group 4
Chassis #930 670 0158
Introduced in 1976, the Porsche 934 was essentially a Group 4 GT race version of the Porsche 930 Turbo road car. Having qualified for Group 4 by building a minimum of four hundred 930 Turbos in two consecutive model years, Porsche then built thirty-one 934 race cars. Taking a standard, galvanized 930 bodyshell the 934 was built-up with an aluminium roll-cage fitted and the cockpit left bare, except for a single, RSR-type driver’s race-seat with safety harness and some extra gauges for boost pressure. The engine output could be varied between 480 and 560bhp using an adjustable wheel on the dashboard and with a homologation weight of 1120kg, every bhp had only to move 2kg. A disadvantage to the performance was turbo-lag and drivers had to get used to accelerating before the apex using a 4-speed transmission, instead of 5-speed. The car was otherwise similar to its production 930 counterpart and the rules stated that the 934 had to retain the same engine spoiler as the road car and therefore could not be fitted the bulky air-to-air intercooler as used on the works 2.1 Turbo RSR. Instead Porsche devised a clever method for cooling the charged intake gases using water radiators mounted in the front spoiler which fed water back to the engine compartment where two cooler-cores were fitted, above which air came in through a finned plenum-chamber lowering the temperature from 300° F to 120° F.
The front compartment carried a front-mounted, 144 litre fuel cell, oil tank and battery and was visibly strengthened with a large aluminium cross-brace fitted overall. Porsche 917 finned brake callipers were fitted with ventilated cross-drilled discs, stronger wheel hubs and centre-lock 10.5” front and 16” rear wheels.
In January 1976, having seen the Prototype 934 test times at the Nürburgring achieved by Manfred Schurti, lapping fifteen seconds faster than any Carrera RSR ever had, most of the racing teams who had been contesting the European GT Championship in 3.0 RSRs bought 934s.

Chassis 0158 was supplied new by Porsche competition dept. to Erwin and Manfred Kremer in Cologne financed by the privateer German driver, Gerhard Holup from Kaarst. Holup raced the car extensively in national championship races but had an agreement in place with the Kremer Bros. which allowed them to enter the car for other important World and European Championship races with other professional drivers. In 1976, Bob Wollek, Didier Pironi and Marie-Claude Beaumont drove the car for Kremer in the Le Mans 24 hours and Reinhold Joest, Jürgen Barth, and Bob Wollek drove in the 6 hours of Dijon.
In 1977 #0158 changed hands and was sold to Dieter Schornstein who took part seriously in all ten rounds for the German - DRM championship, with the sponsorship and livery of Sekurit. During 1977, the car raced in a total of 20 races and in some rounds, the car ran not in Group 4, but Group 5 and had a larger 935-type rear wing fitted.
For 1978, Schornstein wanted more power and acquired a brand new Porsche 935, selling the 934 back to Gerhard Holup. Holup this time paired up with Edgar Dören and together they took part in both European and World Championship races with a new livery and sponsorship, from the tool manufacturer Weralit and were run by Max Moritz. For the 1978 Le Mans 24 hours, the pair teamed up with Hervé Poulain and Romain Feitler and #0158 was prepared and run by Kremer, painted orange with sponsorship from Jägermeister. After 16 hours the car retired with transmission failure. However, from the seven international races that year, the car came 1st once and 2nd twice in GT- class.
The orange colour remained on #0158 for the rest of the 1978 season, but for 1979 the car was painted again, as before, in White with Green and Red stripes and Weralit livery and was entered for the new DRM – German Racing Trophy - which was open to Group 4 cars, although running amongst a field of Group 5 cars as well. Edgar Dören won in #0158 4 times, enough to win the overall championship that year.
After four years of racing #0158 had taken part in 66 races - twice at Le Mans, twice at Nürburgring 1000kms and had won another championship in 1979. Despite the results, the days in Europe for the Porsche 934 were over and the car was sold to Jack Refenning in Florida. Refenning entered the car into the IMSA GTO class in the 1980 Daytona 24 hour race and the 1981 12 hours of Sebring. The following year, the car then came 9th overall in its final race in the USA at the 1981 Daytona 24 hours.
In 1982 with now over 70 races to its name, Refenning advertised #0158 for sale in the Porsche Club of America magazine, ‘Panorama’.
In 1991 it passed to Jean-Paul Richard of France, who kept the car until selling it in 2004 to Karlsruhe-based Porsche specialist, Manfred Freisinger. Freisinger meticuloulsy restored the car and had an F.I.A. Historic Technical Passport issued in 2011.
In 2012 the car was sold by Freisinger and brought to the UK by a private collector. In 2013, BRDC member John Minshaw owned the car briefly, before he racquired a Porsche 935 instead and the car was then sold to the current US based collector.
